PEMBROKE – The Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) is partnering with the Pembroke Lumber Kings to bring 1,300 hockey fans to the Pembroke Memorial Centre for a game against the Ottawa Jr. Senators on Friday, Feb. 6.
RCDSB students from 12 area schools, including Cobden, Westmeath and Beachburg, will invade the PMC for an 11 a.m. Canadian Junior Hockey League regular season game which is being billed as RCDSB Hockey Day in Pembroke.
“Our board is delighted to be involved in this partnership with the Pembroke Lumber Kings organization,” board chairman Dave Shields said. “The players are such good role models for our students and seeing them in action is a thrill for our students.”
The Lumber Kings and the Junior Senators are part of the Canadian Central Hockey League (a division of the CJHL). The Lumber Kings and the Senators are in a heated battle for top spot in the Yzerman Division as they sit one and two respectively in the division. As of Jan. 26, only four points separate the two teams with the Lumber Kings having a game at hand, so Hockey Day in Pembroke could be an epic contest for top spot in the division. The Senators have 71 points in 49 games while the Lumber Kings have 67 points in the 48 games.
The Lumber Kings are led by Felix Chamberland (30 goals, 69 points), Alexandre Boivin (19 g, 64 p) and Anthony Nellis (26 g, 62 p) – three of the top six scorers in the league. Joey Champigny leads the Senators with 23 goals and 60 points and sits in seventh in the scoring race.
The Pembroke Lumber Kings have been great partners with RCDSB schools. Each year players regularly visit our schools to read to young students and share their experience as hockey players with our students. The students really enjoy that experience and RCDSB Hockey Day in Pembroke will be an opportunity for RCDSB students to see what Lumber King players do best – play hockey.
