DOUGLAS — Twenty participants from around the county spent a full day learning about safe food handling.
The one-day course, held last Friday at the Barr Line Community Centre, was organized and sponsored by members of the Renfrew County National Farmers Union and the Ottawa Valley Food Co-op.
It was an informative and educational course titled Safe Handling of Food. Margaret Coady, a public health inspector with the Renfrew County District Health Unit, was the presenter.
The 20 participants studied various topics, including: public health and the law; food borne illness; micro-organisms; safe food handling techniques and food safety management.
The participants ranged from high school students, interested in food services, to residents involved in local non-profit organizations who handle food, to restaurant owners to local home-owners doing small business selling food items out of their homes and at farmers markets.
Ms. Coady, the knowledgeable and informative instructor, did an excellent job of the course presentation using visual and overhead instruction.
As one of the participants said, “The instructor held our attention throughout the long, all-day course.”
At day’s end, each of the participants did a written test and will be presented with a certificate at a later date.
