BEACHBURG — A Beachburg girl is holding a CHEO fundraiser birthday party.
Bronwyn Kenny turns 10 years old on Friday, Feb. 19. For one hour on that day, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., she invites everyone to the Beachburg Arena to skate and those in Grades 1 to 8 to participate in a fun race with prizes.
To make a donation, there will be a donation jar at the Beachburg Bullpen Canteen, she said.
Twice a year Bronwyn’s brother Aidan, who’s eight, goes to CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) due to a medical issue. She also knows other children go there, some staying for a long time.
Her parents, Andrew and Melanie, had told her she could have a skating party, but with a limited number of children invited. She talked about the fundraiser with them, and they gave it the okay.
Like many fundraisers, she does have a sponsor, besides her parents who are paying for the ice time. Cathy Horner of Beachburg Bullpen Canteen, is sponsoring a pizza for the first winner in each of the age categories for the fun ice race and a slice of pizza for the second place finisher in each category.
There are six fun ice stations, Bronwyn said. The first is slippy slide – a skater goes under a hockey stick. Number two is dizzy spin – turn around 20 times. The next is a butt balloon burst. Explaining, she said you wrap a belt around your butt and back up into balloons — one must burst. The fourth game station is stick hop – five hockey sticks laid out in a row and a skater must jump over each one. The fifth game is zig zag— going around tires or pylons. And the final game is puck shoot — five of 12 pucks must go into the net.
Bronwyn said the full cycle of games will be timed and the top two in each age group win.
“This is the first time I’ve done something like this,” she said.
However, last summer, during the Beachburg yard sale, she and a friend had a table and donated the $35 they raised to Beachburg Relay for Life.
“I don’t know how much I want to raise,” at the party, Bronwyn said.
It was a recent decision to do the fundraiser, so she’s hoping the word gets out and a lot of people show up for the event.
“Rush there after school on Friday to take part in the fun,” she said.
