(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the OPP investigated 267 calls for service during the previous week.
Frauds
Residents called the OPP reporting various attempts at frauds, including the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam, a death threat extortion attempt, and an inheritance scam.
The Competition Bureau of Canada has an excellent website with useful information on different types of scams. The Little Black Book of Scams is a resource available on their website filled with information Canadians can use to protect themselves against a variety of common scams. It debunks common myths about scams, provides contact information for reporting a scam to the correct authority, and offers a step-by-step guide for scam victims to reduce their losses and avoid becoming repeat victims. Provincial Constable Dave Peace is investigating after a fraudulent cheque was accepted at Stinson’s Gas Bar in Cobden. On Tuesday, June 14 a customer attended the gas station and purchased gas and other items using a third-party cheque. The cheque was returned to the business as it had been written on a closed account. The officer and store attendant were able to identify the suspect and charges are pending.
Domestic Violence
OPP officers investigated eight domestic disputes. One female was charged with assault and failing to comply with a probation order and one male was charged with assault and domestic mischief. No other criminal offences occurred.
Break and Enter
On Monday, June 13 at 1:50 a.m., OPP officers responded to a break and enter in progress on Fortington Street in Renfrew. The caller reported hearing glass breaking and lights on at a neighbour’s home, when they knew the neighbour was away. Prior to police arrival a male was seen leaving the home walking towards King Street.
A broken basement window was located. The homeowner advised nothing appeared to have been stolen. Physical evidence was seized from the scene. The Canine officer attended and tracked the suspect for a time, but was unsuccessful.
Provincial Constable Mark O’Dacre is continuing to investigate.
Assault
One male is facing charges after police responded to a report of someone damaging a vehicle and front door on Saturday, June 18 at 12:50 a.m. The incident took place on Gordon Ferguson Place in Arnprior and later more damage was done on Ida Street.
Police located and arrested a 16-year-old male after a brief struggle. He is charged with four counts of mischief under $5,000, four counts of uttering threats, assault and causing a disturbance. He will appear in youth court in Renfrew on Wednesday, August 3. Under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act he cannot be identified.

Thefts
OPP officers investigated 11 thefts during the past week. Stolen property includes gas, personal property (cell phone, GSP, loose change, gym bag) from unlocked vehicles, and two bikes.
One bike was stolen from St Joseph’s elementary school in Arnprior between 9 a.m. and noon on Monday June 13. It was recovered on Friday, June 17.
The other bike was stolen from a back yard on McGonigal Street West in Arnprior overnight on Monday, June 13. It is described as a Haro green BMX bike.
Officers are investigating after a report of someone stealing medals. On Saturday, June 18 the complainant called the OPP to report someone known to them removed medals from their home. The suspect claimed they were taking the medals to donate them to the Legion in Renfrew. The medals were never received by the Legion. There is a suspect in the case and Provincial Constable Marc Bennett is continuing to investigate.
