WHITEWATER REGION — Whitewater Region township is growing and there are plenty of people who have knowledge on what is needed to bring economic development to the area.
Whitewater Region Mayor Hal Johnson informed council at its meeting last night that he is bringing forward a Notice of Motion at the July 5 council meeting to strike an Economic Development and Growth Advisory Committee.
“What I’m proposing is that we have, and I have been doing background work on this, and have people committed to this, and that is to have people from the general public of entrepreneurship and tourism, and so on and so forth, to be on an advisory committee that will meet, discuss the future and direction that they think we should be going, and make recommendations to council, so we are given the direction that things are going.”
Last minute request gets approval
Whitewater Region council agreed to be a hole sponsor at a cost of $100 for the Royal Canadian Legion Cobden Branch 550 upcoming golf tournament.
Mayor Hal Johnson thought it had been pre-approved during budget discussions, but learned at the meeting it had only just come in.
“It’s not in the budget,” said Chief Administrative officer Robert Tremblay.
Councillor Daryl McLaughlin suggested that not only should the township provide the $100 for a hole, but also a couple of township golf shirts as prizes.
However, he added, like other organizations, this request should be coming in prior to budget deliberations in November.
Treasurer Marsha Hawthorne noted the only organization that put in a request for a sponsorship was the Cobden and District Civitan Club.
Whitewater Streetstrut Update
Community Services Manager Jordan Durocher notified council that Jp2g Consultant Inc. is the title sponsor for this inaugural event.
He noted a few other sponsors have come on board, such as businesses, groups and individuals.
There are in-kind donations totalling about $5,000, as well as free newspaper and radio advertisements.
The Whitewater Region Canada 150 event is in Cobden on Saturday, July 15 — a free street party during the day and a paid concert in the evening.
