Trucker charged for driving intoxicated
PETAWAWA — On the morning of Wednesday, January 15, members of the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver in a tractor-trailer.
Officers located and stopped the westbound commercial motor vehicle on Highway 17 west of Petawawa. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and open alcohol was found in the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation, 54-year-old Steven Vanderheyden of North York, Ontario was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus under the Criminal Code.
The driver had his licence suspended for 90 days and the tractor-trailer was towed and impounded for seven days. He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Tuesday, February 5.
In addition to the Criminal Code driving charge, Mr. Vanderheyden was also issued a Provincial Offence Notice for the following violation under the Liquor Licence Act of drive motor vehicle with open container of alcohol.
