WHITEWATER REGION ― More than one million Canadians served during the Second World War and on May 8 the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day was commemorated. In 1945, Canadians cheered and celebrated as the Allied Forces liberated Europe from the tyranny of the Nazi regime.
Local genealogist and historian, Fay Bennett, and her brother-in-law, Mr. Wayne Bennett, said there are still local heroes among us in Whitewater Region. They are Marion McWade, who lives in her own home in Cobden, and Caressant Care residents Ed Stairs, Bill Maltby, Muriel Venezia, Eric Craig and Ron Williams.
During World War II, Canada played a pivotal role in securing this important victory, from troops bravely storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day to freeing the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. For many the victory was bittersweet as over 45,000 soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice.
Inspiration is taken from the legacy of those who came before us. Honour these Canadian heroes who gave everything in the service of their country. For their sacrifice, we will never forget.
