PETAWAWA — The Pembroke & Area Airport is celebrating its 50th anniversary by doing what they do best– promoting aviation and community partnerships. The Fly-In is a free community event that invites pilots from around Ontario and Quebec to “fly in” to the airport for the day. This year the Airport hopes to feature Ornge – Ontario’s air ambulance provider, as so many local people have benefited from that service. Their participation is always dependent upon any emergency dispatches that may arise that day.
Other aviation-related displays will include various locally-owned aircraft, the Allumette Flying Club, Blue Sky Ultralight, the Garrison Petawawa aviation fire truck and the Algonquin Aeromodellers with their flight simulator and club participants. The Pembroke Public Library and Petawawa Public Library will co-host a tent with aviation-related activities and reading sessions for kids.
In addition to the aviation displays, there are several on-ground displays. Joining in the celebrations is Community Living Upper Ottawa Valley who is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It will host a tent with a walk-through of 60 years of its agency supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities. There will also have giveaways for kids and adults alike.
Also new to the event this year is the Trillium Gift of Life Network, better known as the organ donor agency in Ontario. In 2017, the Airport hosted two organ recovery flights and felt that it would be beneficial to bring the provincial agency to the Airport for this event. The booth will be attended by Dan and Carrie Labelle.
Other parts of the day include the County of Renfrew paramedic service, a self-guided tour of airport maintenance equipment and Phil Saar’s food truck. The Airport’s booth will have free tattoos for kids and free 50th anniversary cake. The event is free to attend. Donations are welcomed with proceeds going to support the Project Runway campaign.
As a reminder, the event is not appropriate for pets as it is entirely airside. Service dogs are permitted.
