An explanation regarding Letters to the Editor

Dear Readers: In this week’s edition is a Letter to the Editor from Doug Shields of Cobden asking why a letter to the editor written by Donna Burns and sent to publisher Joe Kowalski is not under the Letters section on whitewaternews.ca website.

I am unable to respond to his letter because of how our website is designed — which I did not do.

Our readers are able to submit Letters to the Editor on the website. An email is sent to the editor (me) advising me I either have to allow the letter to be published or not. I cannot do anything else to it.

I’ve had people ask me to make corrections to the letter they have submitted — I am unable to do that. If I see a spelling mistake I cannot correct it.

If the letter is sent to the editor’s email, I cannot publish it online in the Letters section, so I publish it under Special Interest. I am also able to make corrections to it if necessary.

Please note, if the letter is published under the Letters section, it does not appear online except when you click on Letters. All other items uploaded appear under the news column as well as under the column they are published under by the editor. As an example, when I upload a letter under Special Interest, it appears in the news column which everyone sees when they go onto the website, as well as under the Special Interst heading.

All letters to the editor are published in the 115 printed copies of whitewaternews.ca

I hope this answers Mr. Shields’ question as well as explains how the website works.

Sincerely,

Connie Tabbert
Editor
