BEACHBURG – Beachburg high school student Connor Webster has been awarded a Queen’s Chancellor’s Scholarship as he prepares to study Commerce in the fall.
He is currently a student trustee with the Renfrew County District School Board and a student at Fellowes High School in Pembroke.
“I am excited by the news,” said Connor. “I applied knowing there would be fierce competition, so to be counted as one of the recipients is truly an honour. More than anything, the additional financial support will go a long way toward relieving some of the stress of managing day-to-day expenses so I can maintain a strong focus on my studies. A huge thank you is owed to my family, friends and colleagues who have supported me over the past four years.”
The scholarship is given to students who demonstrate exceptional academic results, outstanding extra-curricular involvement in both the school and community and original and creative thinking. Every year, only 50 students from across Canada receive the Chancellor’s Scholarship. This scholarship is valued at $36,000 over a four-year period of study.
“Connor is very deserving of this award,” said Board Chair Wendy Hewitt. “In his time as a student trustee, he has continuously offered an intelligent and well-rounded perspective on a range of issues affecting students across our district. His passion for student voices and inclusion was always top of mind. We are very proud of him and wish him the very best.”
To qualify for the scholarship, students have to meet the following: Superior academic ability with an overall grade average of 90 percent-plus; demonstrate creative and original thinking; proven leadership qualities and be nominated by their high school.
While fulfilling his duties as the Student Trustee of the RCDSB, Connor has also served as the Professional Development Officer of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association, co-ordinating the professional development of Student Trustees and young politicians across the province. Additionally, Connor held an important role in forming the Ottawa Valley’s first ERSL competitive soccer program out of the Opeongo Minor Soccer Club. Last summer he captained the U-17 team in their inaugural season. Connor has held a senior executive role on Fellowes’ Student Council as well.
After completing his studies at the Smith School of Business, Connor looks to fulfill a career in the fields of sports management, financial consulting, or law.
