The Cobden Civitan Club held its 25th golf tournament at the Oaks of Cobden golf course on July 30, beginning at 7:30am and ending with a dinner at 7pm where they honoured the winners, and the staff that had made the last 25 [actually 26] years possible.

The tournament raised over $12,000 for local healthcare, such as Renfrew Victoria Hospital, Pembroke Regional Hospital, Hospice Renfrew, Connectwell, and the Robbie Dean Health Centre, donating $3000 each.

Ted Barron, member of he Civitan Club of Cobden, said that the 25th was supposed to be last year, but was postponed due to the pandemic, despite still having the tournament.

“Other than more distance and restrictions, it’s pretty much close to normal.” he said.

Civitan club member Mary Moss also said this was “one of the larger” tournaments.

Barron said that they’ve likely raised well over $250,000 over the twenty-five years since they began, due to overwhelming community support.

“They know that it’s going back to the community.” he said.

Another reason to postpone as to honour the owners of the Oaks of Cobden, Jerry and Janet Paxton,

“The reason we can be the cheapest tournament around is that Jerry and Janet gave us a deal on the costs.” said Mary Moss.

The Civitan donated $100 to a charity of their choice, and will plant a tree in their honour.

They also honoured Oaks manager Carrie Stoppa and groundskeeper Robert Wood in the same fashion.

Steve Headry had a hole-in-one at the Ninth Hole.

The women’s team winners was Dr. Stephanie Langois’s team with a score of 76.

The men’s team winner was Matt Barron’s Shell team by retrogression, tied at 62 by William Enright’s team.

Kevin McFarlane’s team won the putting green with a score of 150 for the morning’s teams, and Miriam Hunt’s team in the afternoon with a score of 100.
