Mary Moss, Cobden Civitan Club
On Friday July 29th the Cobden Civitan Club held our 27th Charity Golf Tournament in support of health care in our area.
This year’s tournament was dedicated to the memory of Ted Barron, one of the founders of the tournament, who passed away in February.
Ted was committed to Civitan and to our community and worked tirelessly to bring financial support to organizations and people in need and do it through enjoyable, social activities.
He was a model for volunteerism and that is being carried on by his family as was evidenced that day.
His wife Daphne, daughter Julie, granddaughter Ali and long time friend and employee Shawna McGrath worked on our hole in one and hosted the longest drive (of a marshmallow!).
His son Chris, daughter-in-law Diane and granddaughter Emily volunteered at the putting green.
Meanwhile his son-in-law Mike and grandchildren Riley, Brendan and Mac and Ali’s husband Brandon played in the tournament.
Giving to your community is not a solo effort and his wife Daphne was always with Ted lending a hand and giving support.
The Civitan Club raised over $17,000 with the support of 216 golfers, 73 hole sponsors and 45 volunteers from the club and community.
A special thanks goes out Carrie Stoppa and the staff of the Oaks of Cobden who support us every year.
Money has been donated to the Pembroke Regional Hospital, Renfrew Victoria Hospital, Hospice Renfrew, ConnectWell and the Robbie Dean Centre.
The annual golf tournament is one of the Club’s major fundraising events of the year in support of local community services.
This past February the Civitan Club’s annual fishing derby event raised $24,500.
The money was donated to Hospice Renfrew, the Robbie Dean Centre, Living Without Violence Men’s Project, Bernadette McCann House for Women and the Township of Whitewater Seniors Centre.
