WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Fans of midget fastball were sitting on the edge of their seats for the final playoff game of the Upper Ottawa Valley Fastball League midget division.
When the final inning was done, Cobden Flyers were division winners, which capped off also winning the regular season.
The Flyers edged the Micksburg Twins 6-5 Tuesday night in Cobden.
Julie Hennessy, who has watched 18 years of fastball, said, “It was one of the best playoff games I’ve seen.”
At the end of regular play, which is seven innings, the teams were tied at three each. Under play-off rules, if there are going to be extra innings, each team begins with a runner on second base.
After eight innings, the game was now tied at 4-4.
In the ninth inning, Micksburg’s Carter Ryan came in, making it 5-4.
However, with Cobden having home advantage, it had last bat. Ryan Donohue scored in two runs.
“It was an exciting final,” Ms. Hennessy said.
She said it was definitely a Battle of the Pitchers, who were John Enright for Micksburg and Brendan Hennessy for Cobden.
The season is now done. There are five teams in the midget division – Cobden, Westmeath, Micksburg, Douglas and Eganville.
