PEMBROKE — The Fellowes High School girls curling team returned home with a third place finish from the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association championships.
The event was held late last month in Cornwall.
Team members are Paige Knechtel, Kayla Tyson and Jessica Kenney, all from Beachburg, and Danielle Hall from Pembroke. The coach is Joe Hall and school representative is Leanne Hall.
This is the third, and final year, this team will play together, said Paige.
To get to EOSSAA, the girls had to win both games at the county level, defeating Opeongo High School and Bishop Smith Catholic High School. Two years ago, the girls also made it to EOSSA, returning home with a fourth-place finish. Any high school curling teams within the county can play at the county level, Paige noted.
Paige said three of the Fellowes team members not only play on the school team, but also with a curling club. Jessica is the only team member who does not play at a club, she noted.
They also made it to the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Association curling championships. Paige could not remember the end result, stating, “We won a couple and lost a couple. We didn’t make it into the semis at all.”
As for the Fellowes girls curling team, Danielle is leaving, so a new team member is needed, Paige said.
“We’re hoping to find someone to fill her spot,” she said. “It’s hard to find someone who curls and goes to school at Fellowes.”
Along with playing in the curling events, the students practice at least once a week, Paige said.
Paige added, curling is not all about practising and winning.
“It’s a very social sport,” she said. “I play club curling and after the game Friday it’s a great social time.”
