WHITEWATER REGION (Westmeath) — The community of Westmeath held its Canada Day 150 celebration, arranged by the Westmeath and District Recreation Association and many volunteers.
The main children’s activities, bingo, a BBQ chicken dinner and the dance with entertainment by and Shattered Glass all took place in the hall.
The BBQ was led by Mike Watson with Larry Schroeder, D’Arcy McMullen and Terry Kenny, among others, helping out.
The 2nd annual Ron Ethier Memorial Horseshoe Tournament was completed with only one rain delay. Lindsay Wright and Joe Ortmann prevailed to become the trophy winners. More entries than last year was a portent that horseshoes is back to stay.
At 4:30 p.m. the rush for the chicken dinner began while the band prepped for an evening of great music.
Rain, off and on all day as well as downpours, made the decision at 7:30 p.m. to proceed with fireworks at 10 p.m. a difficult one. The firefighters managed a good show and the evening ended with a bang.
