WHITEWATER REGION (Cedar Haven Road area) — A large maple tree is now a gnome home.
Pam and Gerry McEwan decided it was time to cut down the tall maple tree at the edge of their driveway on Robert Collins Drive. There was a concern it may topple over and do some serious damage to nearby buildings.
However, Ms. McEwan wasn’t in favour of having a short stump that people could easily trip over.
“I told my husband how high I wanted the tree stump to be so he could build me a gnome home,” she recalled with a laugh.
The stump stands about six feet tall and has been transformed into a gnome home, complete with a deck, roof, and crooked chimney.
“It took a lot longer than I thought it would,” Mr. McEwan said.
The stump had to be squared off with a chainsaw and chisel, he said.
It took about a week to complete and then it was time for Ms. McEwan to decorate it.
She wanted a stump that looked like a gnome home, but that just wasn’t possible.
“My husband is such a perfectionist,” Ms. McEwan said. “He has a hard time making things crooked – he just can’t.
“But, he did make the chimney crooked,” she added with a laugh.
The gnome home is complete with a garden, creek, fence, a door and windows and of course plenty of gnomes.
“It’s so cute,” Ms. McEwan said. “People are always coming by and taking pictures of it.”
