WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Muskrat Lake beach in Cobden received a new addition this week. In an attempt to help clean up the beach area, the Muskrat Watershed Council, in partnership with Township of Whitewater Region, had a laminar flow system put in the lake at the town beach.
This system consists of land based blowers connected to a power system. Self-sinking air lines connect along the bottom of the lake surface and connect diffusers to the blowers. These diffusers and air lines deliver oxygen to water at the lake bottom creating a natural vertical circulation pattern. Along with circulating the water the aerators also help to reduce algae and weed growth.
This system was put in with the hopes that it could deliver some relief to the Cobden beach, and perhaps our area could once again enjoy their beach.
So, take a walk along the beach path and stop to see the system at work. It will take some time to see if this will work for us, and we will be testing the water and watching to see what happens.
This project was made possible by a $16,000 grant from Whitewater Township and another $16,000 interest free loan from the township to the Muskrat Watershed Council. The Township of Whitewater Region will also pay for the ongoing utility costs of operating the unit.
Thank you for your support. If you wish to see what the Muskrat Watershed Council is doing, feel free to drop in to our meetings. The council meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m., in the community hall at the municipal office.
