WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The unveiling of the 427 Squadron Monument will occur on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Hwy. 17 in Cobden at 2 p.m.
Hwy. 17 will be closed from 1:30 to 3 p.m. from Main to Cowley streets, to allow for the ceremony to occur.
There will be parking at the park, at Ross Presbyterian Church, the Cobden dock area and at Cobden and District Public School.
There will be several military dignitaries at the event, including a retired general who was a tailgunner for 427 Squadron in World War II.
This is the 75th anniversary of 427 Squadron and along with the monument being unveiled, other events over the weekend include a meet and greet with a pig roast Friday night and a ball Saturday night, both at Garrison Petawawa.
This monument is to promote remembrance of the fallen, and to honour all members of 427 Squadron who have served within those 75 years, said Honourary Colonel Del Lippert of Cobden.
“It’s great that the squadron elected to have the cenotaph in Veteran’s Memorial Park,” he said, adding, “There is a long-standing relationship between the squadron and Cobden, which goes back some 30 years that the squadron has been supporting Cobden on Remembrance Day and the squadron has also held off-site exercises here in Cobden.”

Editor’s Note: The monument is now erected and it’s absolutely spectacular. However, a photo of the completed monument will not be published in Whitewater News until after the event on Sunday.
