WHITEWATER REGION — There are 6,294 eligible municipal voters in Whitewater Region.
There are 17 candidates vying for 7 positions on council: a mayor, a reeve and five councillors.
There have been four all candidates meetings, allowing plenty of opportunity to hear the candidates and meet them.
As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1,226 votes have been cast, noted Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay.
Reviewing the breakdown, he noted 87 votes have been done by telephone; 732 by internet; and in paper ballots, 230 in Cobden and 177 in Beachburg.
Respectively, that is 19.47 percent voter turnout and seven percent by phone; 60 percent by internet and 33 percent using paper.
Telephone and internet continues 24/7 until 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22.
There are two more advanced polls, today in Westmeath at the community centre and again on Saturday at the Whitewater Wesleyan Community Church on Cedar Haven Road. Both are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
There will also be voting at both homes for the aged on Friday.
There is no paper ballot voting on election day.
Mr. Tremblay noted there was 49 percent voter turnout in 2014.
On voting night, Oct. 22, the candidates and their scrutineers will gather in the council chambers for the closing of the system, he said.
Sometime between 8:15 and 8:30 p.m., it’s expected Mr. Tremblay and treasurer Sean Crozier will bring the tally board down to the community hall. There will be standing room only, he said. Since it’s a small room, the tables and chairs will be put away, which will then allow for more people.
No one will be notified prior to 8:30 p.m. who will be on the next council of Whitewater Region.
