Queen’s Park – An Ontario PC motion requiring essential witnesses to testify on the illegal destruction of documents in the gas plant scandal was defeated by the Liberals in the Legislature today.
“Today, the Liberals chose to cover up the truth instead being transparent and accountable,” said Ontario PC Energy Critic and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski. “They should be ashamed of themselves for voting to hide the facts from the people of Ontario.”
The Opposition Day Motion, introduced by MPP Yakabuski, called on the government to let the Justice Committee complete its investigation into the destruction of documents regarding the $1.1 billion cancellation and relocation of the Mississauga and Oakville gas plants. If passed, former deputy chief of staff to Premier Dalton McGuinty, Laura Miller and computer specialist Peter Faist, who was given inappropriate access to computers in the Premier’s office, would have been called to testify. They were originally scheduled to appear at the committee before the June election.
“We keep hearing the Premier say she believes in transparency and accountability, but when this government is given the opportunity to back their rhetoric with action, the people of Ontario are always let down.” said Interim Ontario PC Leader Jim Wilson. “They deserve answers and accountability, not hollow words.”
