COBDEN — The first All Canadian Sheep Classic event was held in Ancaster, Ontario and two 4-H members from this area competed.
Kyla Ness earned Reserve Showman in the Intermediate Division at the event held earlier this month. Brett Hamilton competed and earned a spot about middle of the pack.
Kyla, 16, said in the Junior Show, which is for those under 21, there are three divisions – junior, intermediate and senior. This event was open to any 4-Hmember.
“It’s like a preview for the royal,” Kyla said, referring to the Royal Winter Fair held in Toronto each November.
“I placed second out of 25 in the junior show for showmanship,” Kyla said.
A competitor for many years, Kyla said this competition was different from the area fairs she participates in because there was an attitude of “I am here to win. It was really competitive.”
In the market lamb class, Oscar, her wether Southdown, placed in the middle of the pack. A wether is a castrated ram.
“He needs to get bigger,” she said. “He’ll be sold at the Renfrew Fair.”
Brett showed a Texel ewe lamb, which also placed about middle of the pack, she noted.
It’s now time to prepare for the round of fairs in this area, Kyla said. She has yet to decide which fairs she’ll compete in, but the choices are: Almonte, Beachburg, Merrickville, Cobden, Shawville, Renfrew, Russel, Carp, Richmond, Metcalf and then the Royal.
