GOLDEN LAKE — Green Burial Ottawa Valley, a grassroots group made up of local residents, is taking steps to give people of the Ottawa Valley more options when the inevitable occurs. Most of us make decisions around the disposition of our body and choose either traditional burial (with or without embalming) or cremation. But have you heard of the option of green or natural burial?
According to the Green Burial Society of Canada’s website: “Green Burial is a statement of personal values for those who seek to minimize their impact on the local and global environment. For people who are mindful of the cyclical nature of life, green burial is a spiritually fulfilling alternative to conventional burial or cremation. It is an environmentally sensitive practice: the body is returned to the earth to decompose naturally and contribute to new life.”
Presently there are seven cemeteries in Ontario which allow green burials but none in our immediate area. This small but mighty group, made up of residents from all over Renfrew County, hopes to change that.
To bring attention to this endeavor, residents of the Ottawa Valley are invited to an information session offered by committee members of Green Burial Ottawa Valley. The evening will discuss what green burial is as well as answer questions from the community.
Everyone is invited to come out to the Golden Lake Community Centre at 3314 Lake Dore Road (located on the corner of hwy 60 and Lake Dore Road) on Monday, June 4th from 7-9pm and learn about this alternative option for when your time comes.
This is a free event.
