MICKSBURG – The Canadian Milking Shorthorn National Show held its event virtually, with video and pictures of the animals.

Janet Edwards of Micksburg submitted the winning hiefer that was Junior Champion, the top hiefer of the show.

“We were surprised.” she said about winning, though she said she’d won before in a previous year and an honourable mention another time.

She said she’s been farming for 25 years.

“They compare the animals to each other, and take the animal that is more correct, and is a true comparison to the ideal model.” Steve Edwards said, “There’s an ideal model of what the ideal hiefer is to look like. The one that is closest to the ideal. Each judge has an opinion on which they prefer.”

He explained the breeding process in simple terms. “We’ve got a cow we want a calf out of. We pick a bull that complements a bull that compliments their strength. It’s kind of an educated guess.”

“There’s a lot of different things to look at. Thighs. They want the biggest one. It’s kind of hard to explain. You look at how the udders are attached. You want them higher. Feet and legs is another important thing.”

“This is the first time they did a virtual show.” he said. “It’s only because of the covid that they.”

Steve said that they had a plan for the winner.

“We plan on breeding her.” he said. “We plan on having her out and see what she’s like, and hopefully it works.”
