RENFREW-NIPPISING-PEMBROKE — On December 8th, 2016, the Trudeau Government signed the International Joint Commission’s Plan 2014 which called for raising the water levels in the Great Lakes watershed.

Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau requesting the federal government provide direct flood assistance which is both fair and comprehensive.

For the second time in three years, many communities and businesses in the Ottawa River and Great Lakes watersheds are experiencing flooding due to record-high water levels.

As a result, individual property owners are out of pocket tens of thousands of dollars repairing their properties in 2017, now face the same situation in 2019.

“Any municipality with waterfront directly connected to the Great-Lakes and Ottawa River watersheds are affected. Changes in property assessment on waterfront properties shifts the tax burden to all residents,” said Gallant.

“There are over 200 million dollars in the federal budget to save the whales. How about some funds to save property owners from higher taxes or bankruptcy?”

She stated property owners and municipalities need time to prepare for next year’s flood season.

Gallant is asking constituents to support her call for federal flood funding by emailing the Prime Minister at www.cherylgallant.com/trudeau-floods.
