WHITEWATER REGION – No street lights will be added at two intersections with Lookout Road.

Reeve Cathy Regier notified Whitewater Region council at its meeting last night, that while the county erected a street light at the intersection of Westmeath and Beachburg roads, two other intersections where streets lights were requested were turned down.

The intersections of Lookout Road and Westmeath Road and Lookout Road and La Passe Road “don’t warrant a street light,” she said, adding, “They don’t fit into the county’s criteria.”

A point system is used and they must tally at least 120, Reeve Regier said. The Westmeath Road intersection tallied 91 points while the La Passe Road intersection garnered 10 less, at 81 points.

She also advised council that work on Foresters Falls Road between Hwy. 17 and Marjorie Road, a distance of about 2.8 kilometres, will begin in June.

When questioned about the sad state of Storyland Road, Reeve Regier said, “It’s on the radar.”

Councillor Daryl McLaughlin questioned if there has been any discussion regarding the drain behind the Ross Museum in Foresters Falls, which is the responsibility of the county.

“I spoke to Steve Boland (at the county) and he said they would look at it,” he said. “Do you know where they are with it?”

Reeve Regier admitted she has heard nothing about the drain, but will speak to Lee Perkins at the county’s operations department. (Mr. Boland has retired.)

In other county news, Reeve Regier said all negotiations between the county and CN regarding the CN rail line has stopped due to environmental issues and costs.

Council also agreed to have someone from the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association come and speak about the Municipal Accommodation Tax, which is a tax on transient accommodations. This is legislation brought in by the provincial government, but it’s up to each municipality to decide if it wants to implement the tax.
