The province should take back responsibility for paying the OPP.
However, it doesn’t matter who pays the bill, it’s still the same taxpayer footing the bill.
Those are two opinions made at the Feb. 7 Whitewater Region council meeting.
The township’s policing budget in 2018 is just over $1 million.
Mayor Hal Johnson said municipalities should band together and force the province to take back the OPP.
It’s not a service municipal taxes should be paying for, he said.
Councillor Charlene Jackson may have agreed, but said, It’s still the ratepayers paying. It’s still coming from the same pocket.
Mayor Johnson added, The $1 million we are paying will go a long way to upgrading our roads.
