PEMBROKE — On Monday, July 2 at approximately 330 a.m., members of the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP responded to a complaint of theft of credit cards from a vehicle on Moffat Street in the City of Pembroke. The vehicle owner confronted the suspect who fled on foot. Police searched the area for the suspect with negative results at that time.
Later that same morning, at approximately 1030 a.m., police responded after two more vehicles were entered in the same area. The suspect fled on foot after again being confronted by a vehicle owner. Within minutes police located and arrested the suspect in the area of Mary and Murray streets. He was found to be in possession of stolen property from the thefts.
Twenty-four-year-old Chayton Gerald Geoffrey, of no fixed address, has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences: Theft of a credit card – two counts; Possession of a credit card obtained by crime – two counts; Fail to comply with probation – two counts; Theft under $5000 – two counts; Possession of property obtained by crime and Trespassing at night.
He was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody until his next appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Tuesday, July 10.
With summer here, more would-be thieves may be out walking the streets looking for crimes of opportunity and an unlocked door or open window can be an invitation to thieves. The OPP remind all vehicle owners to take the following steps to reduce their chances of victimization: Roll up your vehicle windows; lock the vehicle and pocket the keys; park in well-lit area if possible and never leave valuables in plain view.
Locking up should also be applied to your home, garage, sheds and out-buildings. Lock it or Lose it!
