The Bromley Historical Society welcomes Kyla Ubbink as a guest speaker on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Old Bromley Townsn Hall, 495 Micksburg Road, Osceola. Ms. Ubbink is a leading expert on the restoration, presrvation and conservation of books, prints, documents, maps and paper artifacts, among other things.
“I received training at Algonquin Colllege,” Ms. Ubbink said, “and then had an internship at Library and Archives Canada. This led to my working there as a consultant. It was invaluable experience, which mixed art, culture and science. I fell in love with working on beautiful items and discovering how they were made and how they work. But, aftrer a number of years, I decideed it was time to go into private practice.”
Her current business, Ubbink Book and Ppaer Conservation, established in 2002, is split 50-50 between institutions and private individuals. The latter is something she particularly enjoys.
“People bring to me a variety of family things — love letters between their grandparents, family Bibles, photographs. These heirlooms are a connnection to their past. They are evidence of what life was like in the past. You know your great-grandmother held this Bible and now you are.”
Ms. Ubbink’s talk will offer practical tips for people in attendance — how to protect their mementoes, proper storage for them, dealing with mould, framing, etc. She will discuss measures that people can do themselves. She is hoping people will bring some of their own family treasures and share their stories with her and others and learn how they can be protected for future generatrions.
Following this free presentation, refreshmetns will be served.
