COBDEN — It may sound like a done deal…but no agreements have been signed.
“Wait another week and we’ll have a good news story for you,” said Whitewater Region Councillor Chris Olmstead.
Stories have been flying throughout the area that the Jr. B Prescott Flyers hockey team will be playing out of the Astrolabe Arena in Cobden next season.
Coun. Olmstead, who is sitting at the negotiation table on behalf of Whitewater Region council, said throughout the winter months, there have been a few meetings, but “the agreements have to be signed.”
In a recent story published in the Brockville Recorder, it noted that Dale McTavish, owner of the Pembroke Lumber Kings, had purchased the Prescott Flyers. In the story, it also stated Mr. McTavish was moving the team to Cobden, however agreements had not been finalized.
Whitewater News was not able to contact Mr. McTavish.
Coun. Olmstead said until any agreements are signed, he cannot say it’s a done deal.
However, he did say, this move can only benefit the region. While there has only been talk of the team playing at the Cobden arena, Coun. Olmstead said there are two other arenas in the township that can accommodate any teams that may lose ice time. The arenas are all struggling to fill their ice times, so this will be a way of filling them, he suggested.
He noted that while the team wants to have games at the Astrolabe Arena, there’s a good possibility practises could be held in Beachburg, Westmeath, Cobden and Pembroke.
“This will be something for families to do in Whitewater Region on a Saturday night for entertainment,” Coun. Olmstead said.
