PEMBROKE – The Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee is very pleased to announce it has awarded a fourth Family Medicine Residency Bursary named in honour of Dr. Joseph Foohey.
Dr. Rachelle Denis was recently presented with the $6,000 bursary by Dr. Foohey and Recruitment Committee Co-Chair Bev Zadow.
“It is a pleasure to be able to award this bursary in honour of Dr. Foohey. Dr. Denis has committed herself to serving the residents of this area and I have no doubt she will do so with the same professionalism and dedication to her patients that Dr. Foohey gave to generations of local families during his career,” Ms. Zadow said.
Dr. Denis who was born in Ottawa and grew up in Russell, attended medical school at the University of Ottawa and completed her residency at the Montfort Hospital last October.
She has now taken over the practice of Dr. Joan Tyler who retired June 1st and is part of the West Champlain Family Health Team.
“It was a pleasure to meet with Dr. Foohey, a dedicated physician who served the Upper Ottawa Valley prior to my recruitment. He is highly spoken of an remains a valued colleague,” said Dr. Denis. “The financial support provided through this bursary is greatly appreciated as a new medical graduate and will help to establish my practice inherited from Dr. Tyler.”
In addition to her office work, Dr. Denis is looking forward expanding her scope of care to include clinic work and deliveries.
Dr. Denis and her fiancé Blainne Blaedow Jr. have settled in Laurentian Valley.
“We are very pleased to have been able to offer this bursary as one of our Committee’s recruitment tools while also being able to recognize the outstanding contribution of one of our community’s long serving family physicians who is a role model for rural medicine,” Ms. Zadow said.
Dr. Joseph Foohey is one of the most respected family doctors to practice in the Upper Ottawa Valley. He practiced medicine for more than five decades, serving thousands of patients and becoming an extraordinary role model for new family doctors.
