PEMBROKE — The County of Renfrew is reminding residents that the newly leased abandoned CP Rail Corridor, which is slated to be developed as a future recreation trail, is currently not open to the public.

County of Renfrew Staff are currently undertaking a safety review and inspection of the entire corridor. This will include the temporary removal of berms on the corridor.

“We ask for the public’s patience as we continue to work through the acquisition process and the creation of a CP Trail Management Plan. The corridor is not open to the public and it remains closed at this time to ensure the safety of our residents,” explained County of Renfrew Chief Administrative Officer Jim Hutton.

Renfrew County, Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron formed a partnership in 2011 and recently signed a lease and donation agreements to acquire ownership of the 296-kilometre abandoned Canadian Pacific Rail between Smiths Falls and Mattawa. The county’s portion of the corridor runs from the Arnprior/Ottawa border in the south to the Renfrew/Mattawa border in the North. The intent is to work with local municipalities, the public and other partners to develop the multi-use trail. Public meetings are being planned to gather input in the fall of this year.
