WHITEWATER REGION (Beachburg) — The Township of Whitewater Region and account holders of the Beachburg Scotiabank Branch were informed in December of the impending closure of the branch effective June 2020.
The Committee is doubling down on its efforts to keep the bank open and is planning a demonstration on Parliament Hill for early May and is hoping for participation from other impacted rural committees.
In a recent letter, the Committee also shared its concerns on the legitimacy of the process with Scotiabank’s Ombudsman and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. “The Save our Scotiabank Committee reiterates its position that the Beachburg branch remain open. We will continue to fight to keep our branch”, said Joey Trim, Chair.
Mayor Michael Moore added, “The community has clearly spoken. This bank is crucial to our future. We ask Scotiabank to reconsider and ask the federal government to review how bank closures are impacting rural communities.” A resolution asking for a federal parliamentary review was passed by Whitewater Region Council earlier this year.
Representatives of the committee met with Mike Brydges, District Vice President to review concerns raised at the town hall session. The committee welcomes continued dialogue.
