WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — If you are 55 and older and want something to do this fall, winter and spring, check out the Cobden and District Seniors Association.
The group meets the first Wednesday of each month in the community hall of the municipal office in Cobden for a potluck lunch followed by card games, if you want to play. Every other month, there is a short meeting between lunch and the card games. The yearly membership is $15.
The members also play carpet bowling and shuffleboard each week. Carpet bowling is each Tuesday in the community hall while shuffleboard is each Thursday in the Cobden Legion hall. If you are interested in playing, please call Gail Larose, 613-646-9939. Both are free with paid membership.
Recently retired, Anne Haley joined and became active right away. She was the vice-president and this year is president.
“I wanted to get out and meet people,” she said.
And that was the idea of the organization when it began 50 years ago, noted long-time member Faith Stephens.
“It’s fun,” she said. “It’s a great way of meeting new people. We have a lovely lunch and we play games.”
Celebrating its 50th year, Ms. Stephens said membership is around 65 people, but it has been as high as 113.
Along with shuffleboard and carpet bowling and card games, Ms. Stephens said they also try to get out on bus tours, whether it’s for a day or a few days.
Jack and Janice McLaren were busy over the summer and, with help from Ms. Haley, proposed a Fall Foliage Road trip to Wheelers Maple Farm in the Lanark Highlands with a shopping stop in Balderson. The event is Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Classic Tour bus company will pick up passengers at Cobden Arena at 8:30 a.m. and drop them again around 5:30 p.m. There will also be opportunity to tour the Wheelers Maple Heritage Museum, which is in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the biggest museum of maple products.
Members have first option of registering and starting Thursday, Sept. 21, non-members of the association can register, he said. The cost is $27 for non-members. To register, call Ms. Haley at 613-646-7777 or email her at [email protected]
If interested in joining the association, attend a monthly meeting, speak to any members you may know or call Ms. Haley.
