At 6 a.m. each morning, the lights come on in the barn of Gary and Mary DeVries that houses their 85 chickens and several sheep.
Thursday morning, Feb. 23, when Mrs. DeVries awoke to the alarm clock, she noticed an orange glow in the sky. Looking out the window, she immediately picked up the phone and called 911.
Whitewater Region volunteer firefighters responded to the blaze, but unfortunately, it was too late and the sheep and chickens in the barn perished.
When firefighters arrived on scene, the building was totally engulfed by the fire.
Shortly before 8 a.m., an ambulance was requested on scene as a firefighter was injured, but no further details are known as of press time.
