A recommendation that the Council of Whitewater region adopt a sidewalk policy.

Janet Collins said they wouldn’t adopt the actual bylaws for two weeks, “in case anything come up.”

She said that the county had 300 metres of sidewalk.

She said the outline costs did not include salt and other overhead, only winter maintenance.

She said the total was just under 87000 dollars per year. With $94 a meter to make new sidewalks.

She outlined the definitions for the policy, and went through the plan including standard repair methods.

She said they were trying to include resident occupation in the policy.

She said there was no policy to add them to Haley’s station.

She said they were only looking at building sidewalks along Arterial and Collector’s roads.

Nicholson said that he “Really wanted to know the active transit plan.”

Mayor Moore said “The Age of fancy sidewalks is coming to the the end.” he said, siting salt deterioration as an issue for the sidewalk plan.

CAO Robert Trembley said that it would require some survey work to access alternate plans and to map where all the hard shoulders are.

Councillor Jackson said that “if you call it active transportation, it requires more maintenance” and that the minimum would go up were the policy be referred to as that.

“It requires more review on a daily or weekly basis. If we look at where we want to do hardened shoulders. Any of those roads obviously the shoulder is kept better if we have a hardened shoulder.”
