BEACHBURG — The annual Spring Tea and Flower Show hosted by the Beachburg Horticultural Society was a busy two hours for the convenors.
Judge Sandy Black of Horton Township was kept busy prior to the event judging the 100 entries of plants, flowers and designs.
By the end of judging, Laurie Barton was Foresters Falls was first with 62 points followed by Dorothy Morrison of Shawville, Quebec with 57 points, Eleanor McLaughlin and Margaret Mathieson, both of Beachburg, came in third and fourth.
There are about 50 members in the society and while not all active, those who are are kept busy with taking care of the flowers on Main Street in Beachburg and various gardens throughout Beachburg and at Country Haven Retirement Home, said Eleanor Wright, vice-president of the society.
The members meet the last Thursday of each month from April to November, usually at different locations, she said. A family membership is $15 while a single membership is $10.
“The main benefit of being a member of the horticultural society is learning about gardening,” Ms. Wright said.
Each meeting has an education session, such as how and when to prune shrubs and fruit trees, how to grow orchids or even how to create a flower arrangement in a container, she said.
Usually at the first meeting, a booklet is provided to each member about the year’s events, she said, including participating in the display at the Beachburg Fair.
