WHITEWATER REGION (Westmeath) — Long, beautiful hair…there’s a song about it. And for April White, it could have been written for her.
The Westmeath teenager had waist-length, shiny, brown hair.
“Everybody says how beautiful it is, how they want it,” she said. “They tell me they like my hair.”
With more than she needs, and knowing it will always grow back, the 17-year-old decided to do exactly what people were telling her to do … share it.
“It was hard to donate, because it’s been such a big part of my life,” April said. “But, someone is going to love it just as much as me.”
April asked her mom Sherry to cut it so she could donate it to somebody who needed it. Her mother split the hair into three nine-inch ponytails, cut it, and they were donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.
April’s locks now hang down just past her shoulders.
“This is the first time it’s been short,” she said. “It’s nice. There’s less hassle with it.”
She also realized how heavy hair can be, as her head feels much lighter now.
The daughter of Sherry and Duane, April is a student at Fellowes High School.
Since 2006, Pantene Beautiful Lengths has been partnered with both the American and Canadian cancer societies to provide free, real-hair wigs to women living with cancer. However, with the improved synthetic-hair technology, patients don’t choose real-hair wigs. The final hair donation to be accepted by Pentene Beautiful Lengths will be Dec. 31, 2018.
