COBDEN — An opportunity for Cobden and area churches to give back to the community is happening on Saturday, June 3.
The Big Give is being organized by a few parishioners from various churches, noted Susan Gilchrist, who brought the idea of this event to Cobden.
The idea of The Big Give is for churches to provide an opportunity for residents to have a free day of various things and services, she said. She participated in The Big Give in Ottawa a few years ago as part of the hairdressing team. It was just a simple hair cut for people who needed it, she said.
“It was one of the most rewarding things ever,” Ms. Gilchrist said. “Some people had never had their hair cut professionally, while others were just in need of a cut.
“Local churches across Canada are participating this year,” she said, adding, “We were invited to be one of them.”
There have been two meetings and the churches participating from the Cobden area are United, Wesleyan, Pentecostal, Anglican and Presbyterian, with the Catholic church to still give an answer, she said.
Ms. Gilchrist noted many churches hold fundraisers, always asking the community to support whatever fundraiser it is.
“This is our way to give back to them,” she said. “It’s a free event with no money exchanged. Just come out and enjoy the services we provide.
“We’re looking at possibly a carnival type atmosphere.”
While nothing has been finalized, Ms. Gilchrist said the group is looking for a central location for the event and various events and services to hold. These services could include a children’s area, coffee and muffins, hot dogs and drinks and local music.
“We are looking for services that are also at no-cost for those providing a service at the event,” Ms. Gilchrist said.
Services could include clipping dog nails; simple bicycle repair; crafts or sharing a hobby you enjoy doing.
Another meeting will be held in early May with hopes of finalizing the event, Ms. Gilchrist said.
She noted anyone can provide a service, or participate in a service that is being provided, even without belonging to a church. If you have an idea, call Ms. Gilchrist, 613-646-2495 or Doris Reaney, 613-646-2520.
