WHITEWATER REGION — The 2017 Whitewater Region township capital budget contained $775,000 in road construction projects and $750,000 in equipment and vehicle replacement. This is in addition to funds set aside each year for gravel ($150,000) and culverts ($30,000), which both show a 50 percent increase compared to 2016.
Work commenced this past Monday for a period of three weeks on the road reconstruction project for parts of Cedar Haven, Hydro Bay and Westross roads near Muskrat Lake outside Cobden. The project was awarded to R.G.T. Clouthier in the spring at a cost of $293,987.58.
B.R. Fulton completed the rehabilitation of Whitewater Region’s portion of Snake River Line for $322,050. The project was a high priority on the township’s roads needs study.
Staff completed the reconstruction of Cornerview Road with double surface treatment being applied by Greenwood Paving commencing this week. A portion of Kerr Line was double surface treated in early summer. Roads staff will also be completing Industrial Road and have prepared Turcotte Road for double surface in 2018.
In addition to road construction, the following has also been completed:
A number of culverts were replaced on Astrolabe Road, Hill Top Road, Lacroix Bay Road (2), Kohlsmith Road, Springfield Drive, Grace Street, Pleasant Valley Road, Zion Line (2), Faught Road, the township-maintained portion of Gore Line (and ditching), and Yakabuskie Road. A few more culverts will be replaced in the coming months.
Waterview Road received gravel and all gravel roads received calcium for dust suppression. Additional gravel will be applied to other roads once crushing is completed.
All roadside shoulder mowing was undertaken.
Roadside brushing was done on portions of Stoppa Road, Rox Siding Road, Industrial Park Road, Snake River Line, Sutherland Road, Hydro Bay Road, and Behm Line.
Mayor Hal Johnson said, “Roads are vital to our Township. It is great to see progress on our project list. Infrastructure is central to the Township’s overall economic health and future growth.”
