The Ottawa Valley Midget “A” Thunder travel to Toronto this weekend to participate in the Ottawa District Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship.
They capped off a great regular season and play-off run with a 3-0 victory over the Nepean Wildcats in the ODWHA championship game in Cornwall last Sunday.
After a back and forth 1st period, Jordan Shields jammed in a goal from close quarters in the last minute of the period to give the Thunder a lead. Jaiden Smith drew the only assist. Halfway through the 2nd period, Madison Tomasini sprung Sarah McIntyre in on a partial break-away and she made no mistake in making the game 2-0 heading into the break. Early in the 3rd, Shields re-directed a perfect 2-on-1 pass from Mila Jones to complete the scoring. Katie Douglas made some key saves throughout the game in earning the shut-out.
Captain Morgan McGrath accepted the championship trophy, and the girls received both their play-off championship medals along with their medals for capturing the regular season title.
The Thunder girls ended ODWHA and tournament play with an overall 36 win, 8 loss and 5 tie record for the 2016-17 season, registering 129 goals for and only 34 against.
Katie Douglas tended the net for all of the games, posting an impressive 0.69 GAA average. Along the way, the girls also won the Clarington Applefest tournament title last October. .
