The Council of the Township of Whitewater Region approved the single-source award to Jp2g Consultants Inc. for the Westmeath boat launch creek rehabilitation engineering at a cost of $24,524.16 inclusive of non-refundable H.S.T.

“The Westmeath Boat area is heavily silted.” Superintendent Hodson said. He said that the study would determine the future actions the Township could take in restoration of the launch.

He said that the federal government owns the boat launch due to the Small Harbours Act.

Councillor Nicholson thanked “Staff for looking into it”, and he asked if JP2G would be doing an official survey that can be on record, or just examinging the stream base.

Hodson said it could be clarified, but he said he could not answer directly.

Councillor McLaughlin asked where the Township goes from the study.

Hodson said the study would provide “more education” on the sources of silt.

“It’s gonna be up to us what we’re gonna do.” He said.

“I get frustrated with finding out if we can do anything at the Boat launch.” McLaughlin said.

“Nothing will be done without this background information being executed first.” Hodson said, saying it has to be the basis for any future action the Township takes.

Councillor Mackay asked if DFO would “offer monetary support” for the Launch.

Hodson said that it would also rely on the survey’s results, but that it would likely be “a massive undertaking”, due to the results of their survey in 2014.

“Every bucket of silt that’s hauled out of there is gonna be trucked away, it’s not going to be pitched.” Hodson said. “That tells me this is going to be a massive undertaking. We’re probably going to be in several thousand dollars, and it’s not something we want to tackle ourselves. To get them on board, we have to do some footwork right off the bat, and this is a good way to do that.”

“This will give us a good idea of what could be mitigated for the creek perspective. And the stormwater side “CAO Trembley said.” “but also from the river side and the existing boat launch infrastructure. We’re hopeful this will lead to action.”

He said they chose JP2G due to their involvement in the Flood Prevention Study and fixing a culvert near Wilderness Tours, which showed they have ‘knowledge of the region.”

The motion was carried.
