WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The Whitewater Kings are in action three times this week, two of those games at the Astrolabe Arena in Cobden.
The first game is tonight (Thursday, Jan. 18) against the Carleton Place Junior Canadians at 8 p.m. followed by a game Saturday with the Westport Rideaus travelling to Cobden for a 7 o’clock game. The final game is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against the Richmond Royals in Richmond.
The Canadians are in first place in the Richardson Division with 53 points, while the Kings and the Renfrew Timberwolves are in fourth spot with 38 points each. The Rideaus are in second place in the Richardson Division with 51 points and the Royals are in sixth place with 29 points in the Martin Division.
In last week’s hockey action, the Kings edged the Casselman Vikings, the first-place team in the Martin Division, by 3-1 Saturday night in the Cobden arena in front of a crowd of just under 200.
Quinn Vanhoof opened the Kings’ scoring 16 minutes into the first period. In the second period, King Dylan Kuehl scored off assists from Michael Hubers and Vanhoof with 15 minutes on the clock.
But, goalie Kevin Proulx was to be denied his shut-out when Viking Ethan Wensink, assisted by Carter Malette and Gabriel Rousselle, scored half-way through the final period. But, the Kings weren’t done yet. Short-handed, but with an empty net at the other end, King Lawson Leclaire scored with 40 seconds left on the clock.
While there were no penalties in period 1, the same can’t be said for periods 2 and 3. The Kings earned 16 minutes on eight infractions while the Vikings sat out 14 minutes on seven infractions.
King goalie Proulx stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal while Viking goalie Nicholas Campbell stopped 16 of 18, with the final goal being into an empty net.
