Whitewater Kings find their stride — winning two of their last three games

WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden)  —It was a good week of hockey for Whitewater King Dylan Kuehl as he was awarded the Fist Star for Week 16 of the CCHL 2.

The 17-year-old Killaloe native capped off an eight-point week with a career high five points in a 9-3 win over the Athens Aeroes on Sunday. He led the Kings to abn impressive 2-0 week and extended his pont-streak to five games, where he has 12 points during that time. He leads the Kings in assists with 19 while ranking second in points with 33 and 14 goals in 27 games this season.

The Kings are on home ice for a Saturday, Jan. 12 games when the Athens Aeros return to the Astrolabe Arena for a 7:30 p.m. game.

The next day, the Kings travel to Arnprior for a 1:30 p.m. game against the Packers.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the Kings travel to Westport for an 8 p.m. game against the Westport Rideaus followed by a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Astrolabe Arena when the Perth Blue Wings come to town.

This past week in hockey action, the Kings won two of their three games. On Jan. 8, the Carleton Place Juniors edged the Whitewater Kings 3-2. However, the Kings defeated the Athens Aeros in home and away games. On Jan 6, the Kings defeated the Aeros 9-3 and the day before, 5-1.

In the 3-2 loss, King Dylan Kuehl, assist by Quinn Vanhoof and Tommy Cahill scored in the first period while the Juniors scored twice. Vanhoof was the only goal-scorer in the second period, assists to Cahill and Nicholas Olmstead. In the final period, Carleton Place Junior Jake Code scored, assist to Kyle Lightfoot.

The Kings were in the sin bin 28 minutes while the Carleton Place Juniors sat out 14 minutes.

King goalie Kevin Proulx stopped 23 of 26 shots on goal while Junior goalie Brody Bernard stopped 20 of 22 shots on goal.

Carleton Place Juniors Kyle Lightfoot and Emile Cyr were first and third stars respectively, with King Quinn Vanhoof earning the second star.

In the 5-1 win over the Athens Aeros, King Cameron Mulholland scored just 2:47 into the game, assists to Ethan Hollywood and Brayden Schimmens. In the second period, Dylan Kuehl scored twice, first unassisted and the second with help from Tommy Cahill and Declan Flanagan. Jared Campitelli also scored in the second period, assists by Kiefer Levasseur and Nicholas Olmstead. Scoring for the Aeros was Aiden Bailey with Eric Hulford and Jacob Servage earning assists. Just 37 seconds into the final frame, the only goal scored was by King Tommy Cahill, assist by Kuehl and John Enright.

The Kings were in the sin bin 22 minutes while the Aeros sat out 38 minutes.

King goalie Kevin Proulx stopped 24 of 25 shots on goal while Aeros goalie Morgan Penwell stopped 31 of 36 shots on goal.

Kings Kuehl and Proulx were first and second stars respectively, with Aeros Eric Hulford taking the third.

The Kings scored twice out of 10 powerplays while the Aeros were not able to score on any of the five powerplays.

Sunday, Jan 6 saw the Kings trounce the Athens Aeros 9-3.

The Kings scored three goals in each of period. Dylan Kuehl scored a hat trick, Artyom Shiman scored twice and singles by Kiefer Levasseur, Alec Lindecker, Conrad Cybulski and Jared Campitelli.

Scoring for the Aeros were Riley Youngs, Mitchell Hudson and Cooper Kingston.

The kings earned 10 penalty minutes while the Aeros were in the sin bin 30 minutes.

Kings goalie Kevin Proux stopped 25 of 28 shots on goal while Aeros goalie Morgan Penwell stopped 48 of 57 shots on goal.

Kuehl was awarded the first star followed by teammate Shiman and Aeros Curran Gilmour.
