COBDEN — The Township of Whitewater Region is sponsoring a hole for $100 and donating two township golf shirts to the Cobden and District Civitan Club’s 20th anniversary charity golf tournament.
Each year the club has sent out letters asking for donations towards this event, and this year was no different. Council discussed a motion that it donate two golf shirts with the township insignia on it.
Councillor Daryl McLaughlin, who is also a Civitan member, noted the township has donated money towards other organizations, such as the seniors club in Westmeath and the Opeongo High School band, and ignoring the Civitan Club just isn’t right.
“We’re not supporting our Civitan Club, so I would be in favour of rather than the golf shirts, to do a hole sponsor,” he said.
Councillor Cathy Regier disagreed. Council has only done in-kind donations before with the shirts. And, she added, the library’s golf tournament was this past Saturday and the township didn’t financially support it.
“I would not be in agreement with (donating the $100),” she said. “I think we would be precedent setting. There’s a lot of golf tournaments and a lot of good things that go on.”
Coun. McLaughlin said he wanted past donations by council to the Civitan golf tournament checked.
“For some reason, that twigs in my mind, that in the past, because it’s the Civitan club and all the work that they’ve done here in the area, we had decided we would (sponsor a hole),” Coun. McLaughlin said.
He further noted with the recent donations, council “has really started to open up a whole lot of thoughts.”
Following a few minutes break while treasurer Marsha Hawthorne looked up the information, she reported back that through 2010-2013, council sponsored a hole, while in 2014 there’s no record.
Councillor Chris Olmstead said since it’s the 20th anniversary, council donate $100 as a hole sponsor and donate the two township golf shirts.
Council agreed unanimously to this suggestion.
