WHITEWATER REGION — Two parcels of Crown land in Whitewater Region township could be transferred to the Algonquins of Ontario as part of the Algonquin Land Claim.
Whitewater Region council discussed the two properties at last night’s council meeting.
There is a 751-acre parcel of Crown land on Grants Settlement Road and another 87-acre parcel of Crown land on the Garden of Eden Road.
Once they are transferred, they become taxable properties, noted Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay.
Staff checked out the two properties, and registered the township’s concerns with the Ministry of Natural Resources. It was noted that for the Grants Settlement Road property, existing adjacent private property access must be maintained throughout appropriate easements and that the travelled portions of Moxam Road must be recognized on title.
The current land use will continue as will the adjacent land uses, CAO Tremblay noted, adding, all adjacent land owners have been notified of this possible transfer.
Following a question from Councillor Dave Mackay about the transfer of private lands, CAO Tremblay said in Whitewater Region it is only Crown land.
He encouraged anyone who has a concern about the land claim, to attend a public meeting on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Germania Club on Bennett Street in Pembroke.
