WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — It is without question, residents who are still being impacted by the flood gathered at the Westmeath Recreation Centre over the weekend to attend the public information session.
Impacted residents were able to sit down face-to-face with officials throughout the Township and County of Renfrew to have their questions answered. Township representatives from Whitewater Region included Mayor Mike Moore, Councillor Neil Nicholson, Ivan Burton (by-laws), Doug Schultz (building codes), Sean Croiser (treasurer), Steve Hodson (waste services) and Janet Collins (physical services, roads).
“We have had over 100 people show up today,” said Mayor Moore, who was seen interacting with residents and listening to each of them intently. Councillor Neil Nicolson was also seen speaking with residents and officials alike and is a major player in the organization of flood relief services.
Tables were set up to make it easier for residents to maneuver and were occupied by free cleaning supplies for residents, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Whitewater Region Fire Department (WRFD), Mental Health Services of Renfrew County and the Canadian Red Cross – to name a few. Ontario Works was also in attendance to provide assistance with emergency housing and social services.
“We want people to know we are here to help,” said Shawn Peever, Provincial Constable, Community Safety and Mobilization Officer for the OPP. He stated people were generally in high spirits and could be seen interacting with their neighbours.
The Whitewater District Recreation Association (WDRA) was present and taking meal requests beside the coffee and tea station.
The Whitewater Region Recovery Committee was also in attendance. Headed by Debby Lemaire and Vince Gervais, the committee is seeking volunteers and taking requests for assistance.
“Some people need a lot of help,” said Mr. Gervais, who urges people to lend their time towards clean-up efforts. “When you’re 76 years old, you can struggle to lift sandbags and cause yourself harm,” said Mr. Gervais. Only two volunteers registered throughout the public information session, but the committee remains hopeful.
