Patsy Peever of Cobden shares this photo of her father, Harry Stanley, in the cockpit of this airplane he built in the late 1930s. Mr. Stanley purchased the plans and parts from Curtis Aircraft in California. The plane was powered by an air cooled rotary engine similar to the motor in the spirit of St. Louis, the aircraft flown by Charles Lindbergh in his record-setting trip from New York to Paris in 1927. Ms. Peever said the first date my father took my mother on was for her to watch the airplane perform. Dad’s pilot friend was to fly the airplane overhead to show that the plane was airworthy. The airplane flew beautifully. My father was from Ireland and immigrated to Canada, settling in Levack, near Sudbury, where he built this beautiful airplane while working.
