Alex Got Lost: A [Half]Year in Review

Hello, Whitewater Region!

I’m going to be doing a Year in Review for the last day of 2020; a collection of my favorite photos from my first half-year in this publication, and some thoughts.

I’ve enjoyed my Alex Got Lost segments, talking about my experiences driving around Whitewater Region, though they were sparing and mostly just scavenger hunt pictures of old buildings I saw. The first thing I cut when I’m short on space is my own editorials, followed by press releases. This paper is focused on community events and relevant news.

The Pandemic has made this easier than it probably should have been, but also harder. There’s not many events to cover, and I have plenty of time to set this up and take off to deliver if I need it. As things pick up, I will likely have to adapt to that, especially with a vaccine coming, but likely it will not return to how it was.

In the coming year, it will likely start off much worse than before, but may get better. A lot of the world is beyond our control; my generation grew up in a world that told us how to succeed in a way that no longer existed, and now are living through one of the worst pandemics in recorded history along with the next. I don’t need to go into the political and social turmoil that’s going on in the rest of the world, but it will likely make it even harder down here in Whitewater, before it makes it better.

I’ve been getting lost less lately, or getting lost in the surrounding townships, but in the new year I plan to try and have more editorials in the paper. Though I often cut them to maintain space, I feel I should use my platform at least to showcase my discoveries or thoughts on the week. I also plan to see if I can keep finding more events in the pandemic, and continue listening to the community.

Please continue to send me your opinions, your ideas and your pictures. Even if I disagree, or can’t use them, I’m happy to follow up or put more of the community in, and show what Whitewater is made of.

Thank you all,

Alexander Leach, Editor
