April 30 Assembly of School Councils offers ideas, expert opinion and a free meal

PEMBROKE — Come and enjoy a three-course meal prepared by Fellowes High School’s award-winning hospitality program students and workshops led by the Renfrew County District School Board’s education experts all in one evening at the fourth annual Assembly of School Councils.

Fellowes High School will host the informative, tasty and free evening on Thursday, April 30, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A dinner of roast beef, whipped potatoes, oven-roasted vegetables, salad and cake kicks off the evening followed by conversation and workshops all geared towards education, the student and the parent.

RCDSB experts, educators and speakers including RCDSB Chair Dave Shields, RCDSB PIC Chair Tracy Somes, Phoenix Centre intern PhD student counselling psychologist Alisha Henson, Beachburg Public School principal Jody Kitson-Roy, program administrator Jackie Stadnyk, numeracy facilitator Shelagh McCarthy, mental health leader Lisa LaRiviere, student trustee Theresa Paplinskie, Information and Communication Technology Coach/eLibrary co-ordinator Jonathan Pratt, student success leader Jacqueline Poirier, principal of special services Jodie Barrett, applied behaviour analysis co-ordinator Rachel McKay, superintendent Brent McIntyre, secondary curriculum leader Alanna Emon, eLearning contacts Katie Long and Brian Reid, Sherwood Public School principal Steve Griffiths and more.

Topics for the evening include parent engagement; developing understanding for basic math; mental health strategy and mindfulness; current assessment practices; overview of special education; Inclusion Support Assistant pilot project; health and physical education curriculum; homework help; values and self compassion for managing daily stressors; and promoting a growth mindset in children.

Following dinner, there will be greetings from the RCDSB and PIC chairs and a brief talk on parent engagement. Attendees will then have the opportunity to choose two brief carousel sessions on one of the topics mentioned above.
