RENFREW COUNTY — On November 10, at approximately 7:30 a.m. members of the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began investigating after a break, enter and theft was reported at the Royal Canadian Legion in Chalk River. It is believed that the break-in took place at approximately 2:00 a.m. on November 10.
Using a front end loader freshly stolen from the landfill site on Baggs Road in Chalk River, unknown person(s) drove the loader into the front doors of the Legion. After gaining access to the building the person(s) responsible used the machine to haul the ATM away. The loader was found abandoned a short distance away. The ATM, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash, has not been recovered.
“At this time we are not able to say the two incidents are linked,” said Cst. Shawn Peever, Media Relations and Community Safety Officer for the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP, in an email to Whitewater News’ editor when asked if the incident was related to the attempted ATM theft from Kenny’s Store in Westmeath.
OPP’s Forensic Identification Services (FIS) is assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP or Pembroke/Renfrew County Crime Stoppers.
